The Journal of Forensic Sciences (JFS) Editorial Office is thrilled to inform you that the JFS January 2021 issue will present both a new journal format for article content as well as a new JFS cover—giving JFS a fresh, modern look.

In addition to the “new” look, you will find that the articles contain an additional feature: highlights. Highlights concisely convey how the article impacts forensic science and have been proven to broaden an article’s readership and significance.

The AAFS recently embarked on increasing its Social Media (SM) presence in the forensic sciences community and JFS has been utilizing these platforms to promote selected articles. The Editorial Office is in the process of creating Author Social Media Guidelines to facilitate the expansion of our SM promotion.

The JFS Editorial Office has also been working on additional process enhancements, including graphical abstracts and embedded rich media, the latter of which will allow multimedia items to be submitted (e.g., video and audio files) and embedded into the published article. We hope you, the AAFS members, will be excited with the new enhancements. An announcement will be forthcoming in the next few weeks regarding these improvements.

JFS submissions reached an all-time high in 2020, and it is a goal to continue that trend in the new year. If you are looking to publish, JFS is interested in your work. As a reminder, the electronic platform for JFS manuscript submissions is Please contact JFS Managing Editor Brenda Peat at with any questions.

As we celebrate the successes of JFS, I would like to personally take this opportunity to thank all of you who have contributed to that success and to wish everyone the very best in the New Year 2021.
