Trained dogs are incredible chemical sensors, far better at detecting explosives, narcotics, and other substances than even the most advanced technological device. But one challenge is that dogs have to be trained, and training them with real hazardous substances can be inconvenient and dangerous. Scientists at NIST have been working to solve this problem using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)—a polymer that can catch odors, then release them safely over time. This means that canine trainers may not have to carry around samples of explosives or narcotics, which can be a hassle, and dogs may not need to be unnecessarily exposed to substances such as fentanyl, which can be dangerous when sniffed.
